Blueberry Week in Enzklösterle
For centuries, the women of Enzklösterle in the Black Forest have gone into the woods to pick blueberries.
Before tourism arrived in the Enz Valley, the blue fruit of the heather plant was an important source of income; even the children were given three to four weeks off from school so that they could help with the gathering in the mornings.
Although the people of Enzklöster did without reefing when harvesting - the bushes are combed with a coarse iron comb and even unripe green berries are harvested - good pickers managed 40 to 60 pounds a day - and earned up to twelve marks for their "blueberry coffers".
The community in the northern Black Forest is dedicating an entire week to the blue gold. On guided walks, the inhabitants show where the best spots are in the forest.
There are cooking classes and a large blueberry market where delicious pancakes, blueberry wine or jam are sold.
On Saturday, the blueberry princess will make her entrance - and various music and traditional costume groups invite you to the blueberry party.
A children's programme with handicrafts and face painting as well as pony rides complete the programme.
