Chestnut Festival in Calabria

Chestnut-Festival, Sant`Agata di Esaro

Sant'Agata Di Esaro, a municipality of about 2000 inhabitants, is situated about 70 km north of Cosenza (Calabria) on the headwaters of the river Esaro on a hill 550 meters above sea level.
The village is surrounded by chestnut forests, which have always served the population as a source of food and raw materials.

In order to preserve this tradition, the municipality organises an annual chestnut festival that is known beyond the borders of the region and attracts up to 15,000 visitors to the small village.
They are offered all sorts of things:

There are around 100 stalls selling traditional Calabrian products: Wine, cheese or sausage. Under dozens of fires chestnuts roast and exude a beguiling scent.
Musicians and dancers sing and dance through the streets during the event.
