Day of the Sardinera
Barefoot, in long skirts and with a wide basket full of sardines on their heads: for centuries the women of Santurtzi brought the catch of the day to the markets of the surrounding area - above all to Bilbao, only 14 kilometres away.
The fishing village, founded in 1075, is still proud of its fishing tradition, which is celebrated at the end of September and beginning of October with the Day of the Sardine Women, organised by the Brotherhood of Fishermen.
Dance and theatre. Fishing workshops and exhibition of fishing boats in the harbour.
A procession from the Sardinera monument to the quay is part of the programme - and of course guests are offered freshly caught sardines from the grill.
