Festival of Olive Trees

Thousand-year-old olive tree near Ulldecona

They are a symbol of life and can live to be 2000 years old: Olive trees
. The largest number of thousand-year-old trees - including the oldest olive tree in the world, the 314 planted Farga de Arión - can be found around Ulldecona in the southeast of Catalonia.

There are 1500 specimens in the region, which celebrates this wealth with a festival at the beginning of December.
Among the ancient trees, people sing and make music, taste olive oil and other local products. Visitors can help with the olive harvest and marinate the fruit in herbs and oil on the spot.

A group of amateur actors shows how the Romans cultivated olives 2000 years ago.
The highlight of the festival, however, is a guided hike to the ancient, gnarled trees. A donkey carriage drives children through the groves.
