Festival of the Muscat Grape

Muscat grape festival in Iznate

Iznate, an 800-people village in the interior of Málaga, is known for its avocado plantations - and the cultivation of muscatel.
The grape, which was already cultivated in ancient Egypt and the Persian Empire, is processed here into wine and raisins or sold as fruit.

Every first Saturday in August, the inhabitants of the municipality celebrate their most important agricultural product.
The day begins with a thanksgiving mass for the grape harvest, followed by bands of music, dancing in the squares and through the narrow streets of the village.

In the evening, the main street of Iznate becomes the gastrononomic mile: The organizers distribute more than 800 litres of wine and 2000 kilos of grapes to the visitors on the day of the Muscat Grape.
There are also tastings of regional specialities such as deep-fried pumpkin with black pudding, chickpeas and baticate - a kind of mousse made from avocado, cinnamon and milk.
