Lard Pastry Festival

Spincia or Sfincia are the names of the small round lard pastries made of flour, yeast and eggs
that are served in Sicily on the occasion of the Immaculate Conception - sometimes elaborately filled with ricotta, chocolate chips and candied fruit, sometimes simply sprinkled with icing sugar.
In Custonaci in the Sicilian province of Trapani, the popular pastry is honoured every July with a large folk festival.

For a whole week, the Piazza Europa in this community of 5,000 people is dedicated to Spincia.
The sweet scent of warm yeast pastries wafts from dozens of stalls into the nostrils of visitors.
Thousands of the little rings are eaten over the five days.
But also sweet cannoli filled with ricotta, cassatelle, half moons made of shortcrust pastry with chickpea cream and almonds, or fig biscuits are served. Accompanied by wines of the region.

Every evening, musicians play on the specially erected stage.
The varied programme ranges from folk music to hits to Italo rock and pop. Comedians also provide entertainment with their performances. The festival ends with a spectacular fireworks display.
