Valdepeñas Wine Festival

Half a million hectolitres of wine per year. On a cultivation area of around 30,000 hectares: Valdepeñas is the largest wine-growing region in Spain.
Mainly simple white wines are produced in the region around the town of the same name, but more and more high-quality reds are also maturing in small oak barrels.
For more than 50 years, the inhabitants have celebrated the beginning of the grape harvest in the first week of September - attracting around 10 000 visitors to the municipality every year.

There are many highlights of the week-long festival: The traditional wine stomping in the Plaza de España.
The parade of marching bands from all over Spain. Or the international art exhibition. A poetic competition of toasts, chess and football tournaments or a contest in street painting. The patron saint Virgen de la Consolación is honoured with a religious procession.

In the evening, bands play on a large stage - and of course there are stalls where wines and culinary specialities of the region can be tasted.
The wine museum will also open its doors during the festivities:
the museum is housed in a former wine cellar and shows how wine was produced in the region. In six rooms, visitors can see old presses and clay barrels in which wine used to be stored and equipment for working in the vineyard.
