Chestnut Festival Klostermarienburg
In Mannersdorf on the Hungarian border, Klostermarienberg is situated amidst extensive orchards and chestnut groves.
Founded in 1197, the Cistercian Abbey with its pretty parish church is the venue of a chestnut festival every October.
The local chestnut friends' association shows what is made of the nut at countless stands: Chocolate and pastries, sausage and roulade, cake or strudel, even a beer is brewed here from the chestnut.
In addition to the culinary delicacies, there is also a musical entertainment programme. The association provides information about the cultivation and use of chestnuts.
The highlight is a guided tour to the Liebinger trees: a group of chestnuts - around 350 years old and with a ten-metre thick trunk.
