Festival of Freshwater Fish

Eel, lamprey, grayling or feint: the waters of the Rio Guadiana on the Portuguese-Spanish border are rich in fish - especially between January and April, when many of the species gather in the lower reaches of the river to spawn.
In Pomarão the fishermen celebrate these fat weeks with a two-day festival.

Traditionally, the event starts with a sport fishing competition organized by the local fishing club. They organise boat trips on the Rio Guadiana, guided excursions to the nearby National Park and in the evening traditional dance groups, bands and solo performers perform.
There will also be a fireworks display.

Meanwhile, the fairground along the quayside stews lamprey in red wine or eel in piquant tomato onion sauce, Finte bakes golden yellow in olive oil and a grayling is baked with herbs in the oven.
There are also local wines - white and red - and if you don't like fish at all, you can try a pan with mushrooms from the surrounding area.
