Festival of Grape Ripeness

The Greeks brought vines to the southern Rhone valley in the 6th century B.C., but it was not until Pope John XXII moved from Rome to Avignon in 1334 that a huge leap in quality was made in viticulture.
Today the Châteauneuf-du-Pape belongs to the best red wines of France.

A festival during the grape ripening phase in August reminds us. For three days the village lives in the 14th century, recreates historical scenes, revives medieval wine-growing villages and artisan markets.
The historical accuracy is impressive - as is the quality of the wines that visitors can taste.
