Festival of Grape Ripeness

Grape ripening festival in Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The Greeks brought vines to the southern Rhone valley in the 6th century B.C.
, but it was not until Pope John XXII moved from Rome to Avignon in 1334 that a huge leap in quality was made in viticulture.
Today the Châteauneuf-du-Pape belongs to the best red wines of France.

A festival during the grape ripening phase in August reminds us. For three days the village lives in the 14th century, recreates historical scenes, revives medieval wine-growing villages and artisan markets.
The historical accuracy is impressive - as is the quality of the wines that visitors can taste.
