Festival of Lights in Epernay
Moet & Chandon, Heidsieck or Mercier: on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay, more than 20 great champagne houses line up like pearls on a string. Under the street: a world cultural heritage site.
Cellar vaults with a total length of 110 kilometres, in which 200 million bottles of champagne are stored.
The magnificent boulevard - after the Champs-Èlysées in Paris, probably the most expensive street in the country - opens its doors to visitors in December - at the great Festival of Lights. Then light installations and videos illuminate the facades of the mansions. Several champagne bars pop the corks on the street.
Tastings of various fine vintage champagnes are possible. And excellent gourmet chefs from the region will serve matching appetisers.
A historically dressed military band provides musical entertainment. Imaginative parades complement the events.
The Champagne Museum, which opens in May 2021, can also be visited during the three-day festivities.
The highlight of the event is the grand vintage car parade, when more than 400 vehicles - some dating back to the pioneering days of the automobile - roll down the one-kilometre Avenue du Champagne.
