Lemon Festival in Menton
Menton is known worldwide as the city of lemons. The annual lemon festival in the small town on the Côte d'Azur attracts more than a quarter of a million visitors.
Around 300 volunteers make giant figures out of 145 tonnes of lemons and oranges, which can be admired in the Biovès gardens during the festival.
Every year, the organisers come up with a theme under which the floats are decorated with citrus fruits.
Sometimes the festival pays homage to fire-breathing dragons. Then Bollywood is a guest in Menton with its colourful love dramas and debauched dance scenes. Or the motto is "operas and dances".
On three Sunday afternoons, floats decorated with citrus fruits and manned by charming festival ladies will parade along the Promenade du Soleil by the sea.
Between the floats, music and folklore groups and majorettes will provide the festive ambience.
The public has a choice: either to watch the parades from the stands of the Promenade du Soleil or to follow the parade of golden fruits.
Two nightly " Corsi " will illuminate the city in festive splendour, crowned - on the last day of the festival - by a fireworks display rising above the bay.
