National Fair of the Carmagnola Pepper

A margravial castle from the 12th century. The Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta di Casanova. The Jewish ghetto with its synagogue or the Palazzo Lomellini: there are many reasons to visit Carmagnola, 25 kilometres south of the provincial capital of Turin. At the end of August, another one is added, the Fiera Nazionale del Peperone di Carmagnola.

Since 1949, the locals have been honouring their pepper varieties, which are known far beyond the city's borders, with this event. The sweet Quadrati Allungato, the thin-skinned, delicate Trottola or the round, fragrant Tumaticot, which is promoted by Slow Food. Five varieties of paprika from the region alone bear the DOC seal of quality.

You can try them all during the multi-day festival. As raw food, stuffed or peperonata, the summery, vegetarian stew. Various live acts take place on the Piazza Italia - theatre, comedy, rock music or disco.

There are art exhibitions, cookery workshops and lectures on growing peppers. The local Vespa museum opens its doors until midnight. And a special children's programme ensures that even the bambini don't get bored.
