Dieppe Herring Festival

Dieppe on the Alabaster Coast is considered one of the first fashionable seaside resorts in France: as early as 1832, a luxurious casino opened on the beach promenade, where Norman merchants from Amiens or Rouen got rid of their money.  The opening of the rail link to Paris in 1848 finally turned the fishing village into a weekend destination for the capital.

Nevertheless, fishing remained an important branch of the economy until the 1970s: first and foremost herring, which - salted and preserved on site - was sold on the market stalls in Paris or Rouen.
Today, the fleet consists of around 80 ships that, in addition to herring, primarily fetch scallops, rays and monkfish from the sea - a total of 800 tons of fish and seafood every year.

The city celebrates its connection to the sea in November with a herring and scallop festival. Already early Saturday morning, all the restaurants, brasseries and bars prepare for the lighting of the barbecue fire at noon.
On the embers comes herring and potatoes, which are then served with a piece of sea salt butter. A simple, yet delicious treat.

Besides the herring, scallops are also offered - with a glass of white wine. The brotherhood of fishermen of Dieppe parades through the city in a colorful parade.
In the historic fishermen's quarter Bout du Quai there is a flea market, animations and street art, as well as stalls selling regional products from Normandy.
