Festival of St. Nectaire
The inhabitants of the small town of the same name in the Puy-de-Dôme département are justifiably proud of their St. Nectaire: after all, the cow's cheese with the fine mold coating is one of only five cheeses in the region to bear the Appellation d'origine controlée designation - and has done so since 1955. With its soft, creamy consistency and sweet aroma reminiscent of nuts or mushrooms, it is a welcome guest on any cheese platter.
Also on the celebration of Pentecost. The old town and church square of the small community are transformed into a cheese market, where cheese makers present the variety of flavors of St. Nectaire to visitors, who in turn award the most delicious of the year.
A craft and farmers market shows all the richness of the region - and street theater, concerts, folk dancing and fireworks also provide entertainment.
