Festival of the Olive Branch

"Three drops of sweat come on a drop of oil",
was the old saying, because the olive harvest was a strenuous affair. The agricultural workers celebrated the end of the harvest with an exuberant celebration - in Giano dell Umbria, a community of 4000 souls in Perugia, with the Festa della Frasca, the celebration of the olive branch.

The event starts with the entry of a decorated float, accompanied by olive pickers in traditional clothes and with historical tools. '
The procession is intended to commemorate the time when, at the end of the work, the farm workers received small gifts that tied the landlords to an olive branch.

At the Town Hall, visitors gather for free tastings of traditionally roasted bruschetta with new olive oil and other typical regional dishes such as fritters, rolls, cakes and sweets.
And of course the famous wines from the surrounding hills like the Torre di Giano or the Montefalco Sagrantino.

The culinary highlight will be a cooking competition between distinguished representatives of the new Italian cuisine and supporters of the Cucina della Nonna, the home cooking: modernity versus tradition.
There will also be workshops on the subject of food - especially about olives and their cultivation.

Of course, a folklore group with traditional music and dance will also provide entertainment.
The municipality organizes tours - to the olive groves with their thousand-year-old trees, to the surrounding oil mills or to the nearby Benedictine Abbey of San Felice.
