Husum Crab Days

Port of Husum

Shrimps, more precisely sand shrimps, have been caught in the Wadden Sea since the 17th century
. Especially in the Autumn, the cutters with their characteristic long arms plough over a 20 kilometre wide coastal strip to catch the five to seven centimetre small crab.

On board, the catch is immediately cooked in sea water and stored in the cold store.
Less than 72 hours later, the delicious crabs are loaded onto trucks for further processing at the ports of Husum, Büsum or Cuxhaven or sold directly from the cutter.

Also during the crab days a barge stands at the harbour of the city and offers fresh goods.
A few metres away, at the ship's bridge, hobby chefs compete for the best crab recipe to win the favour of the visitors. And regional artisans show their products at the market.

Fiddling: crab bobbins

The highlight of the festivities is the Husum crab powder championship: in 20 minutes as many crabs as possible have to be peeled without the meat travelling.
The unofficial world record record is 581 grams - set by Marita Peters in 2014.
