Chestnut Festival in Bondo

The Romans brought the chestnut to Bergell 2000 years ago. To this day, one of the largest chestnut groves in Europe can be found near the plains of Brentan above Castasegna, right on the Italian-Swiss border.
Throughout October, the inhabitants of the Bergell valley celebrate their chestnut: with excursions in the chestnut forest, special chestnut dishes in the restaurants, workshops and markets.

Particularly popular is the great Festival of the Chestnut in Bondo, a small, medieval hamlet at 823 metres above sea level at the entrance to the Bondasca Valley.
During the day, typical chestnut products and regional specialities are on sale here, and of course hot chestnuts from the cauldron.

There will also be an ecumenical church service, games for big and small visitors, and excursions to the chestnut forest and to farms that process chestnuts.
The programme also includes concerts by the Bergell men's choir and the music group from Villa di Chiavenna.
