Marvão Chestnut Festival
On the Portuguese-Spanish border, the small town of Marvão towers spectacularly on a 900-metre-high rock plateau.
A medieval fortified village with narrow streets, churches, squares and an impressive castle complex.
In mid-November the community celebrates its Festa do Castanheiro, its chestnut festival - with chestnuts from the fire, in the form of beer, liqueur or sweet treats.
Dozens of stalls also offer local olive oil, wine, sausage and cheese.
On two stages there is music, dance or clown performances. Fire-eaters, jugglers or falconers provide entertainment with their performances.
At the same time, the community's restaurateurs offer special chestnut menus for two weeks.
