Orujo Festival

Infantado Tower in Potes, Cantabria

In the midst of the mountainous landscape of the Picos de Europa in Cantabria, at an altitude of around 3000 metres, lies the small idyllic mountain village of Potes. One of the village's most traditional festivals, in the centre of which the medieval Infantado Tower stands out, is the Orujo festival in November.
Orujo, the typical marc brandy of northern Spain with up to 50 percent alcohol by volume, is brewed in Cantabria in a wide variety of flavours.

Visitors to the festival can watch the public distillation of the spirit, taste it in abundance, of course, and enjoy other regional products and delicacies, such as the hearty chickpea stew cocido lebaniego or picón cheese.
Or you can enjoy the latest cocktail creations based on the local marc in the festival square.

Orujo Brotherhood

The celebrations are accompanied by performances by regional music groups. For example, the bagpipers typical of northwest Spain perform.
And folklore and costume groups parade through the streets of the historic old town, as do the brotherhoods of the orujo distillers, decorated in red and green. Out of them, the best Orujo producer is awarded every year.
