Whisky-Festival Speyside

Speyside Whisky Festival

Glenfiddich, Cragganmore or Macallan are names that connoisseurs around the world take notice: The whiskies produced in Speyside are famous for their fine, round taste and the little, if any, peaty aroma.
But not only distilleries have settled in the county: There are also maltsters, coopers, blenders and bottlers, allowing for a continuous, regional production chain.

Speyside Whisky Festival: Degustation

At the end of April, beginning of May, the distilleries in the region celebrate a five-day festival - with more than 400 different events and thousands of visitors from all over the world.
The focus is, of course, on whisky: many production sites that cannot otherwise be visited open their doors during this week. Workshops, tastings, blind tastings and competitions are organized, where the public vote for the best whisky.

Blackening is a special kind of tradition: an initiation ritual from the 14th century in which apprentice coopers are put into the last barrel they have worked on at the end of their four-year apprenticeship.
Their colleagues then blacken them and roll them once around the cooperage in the barrel.

Whisky-Line in Speyside

But the festival is also a good opportunity to get to know the scenic beauty of the county. During a canoe trip on the Spey, on a trip along the Whisky Line, an eleven kilometer long railroad line from Dufftown to Keith. Or during a hike along the old smugglers' trails in the remote hills and valleys of Glenlivet.
