Cabbage field in Krautergersheim

French Krauts: The Alsatian Sauerkraut Route

Around 50,000 tonnes of cabbage are harvested in Alsace every year - 70 per cent of total French production. Above all, the region between Benfeld and Obernai with its around 60 sauerkraut farms is considered the cabbage hot spot of Europe.
The two towns are linked by the Sauerkraut Route, which is around 25 kilometres long and along which numerous restaurants offer traditional or new sauerkraut dishes. Also those who want to help with the cabbage harvest or visit a production facility are at the right place. In Krautergersheim there is also a small sauerkraut museum - and in September the largest sauerkraut festival in the region is held.

Fresh and sparkling: The Vinho Verde route

In the north of Portugal, on the border with Galicia, a fresh, slightly musty wine is produced: the Vinho Verde. Its vines usually grow on pergolas a good two metres high, which protects the vines from the moisture of the soil and from too much heat. Often vegetables are still grown under this vine roof.
The Vinho Verde route, which winds from Melgaco to Vila Nova de Cerveira along the Portuguese-Spanish border, leads through this lovely cultivated landscape. In addition to wine growers with their wines, visitors can expect fortresses from different eras, palaces from the Far East and small towns with a beautiful old town. Culinary tip: the lamprey festival.

Wine cellar near Tokaj, Hungary

From the nectar of the grapes: The Tokaj wine route

Tokaj-Hegyalja is the oldest wine-growing region in Hungary: the history of viticulture in the region dates back to the year 290, and it is appreciated mainly for its sweet wine Tokay Aszú.
The precious drop from the botrytised grapes of the Furmint grape variety already delighted the Sun King Louis XIV. It is produced in 28 municipalities through which the Tokaj Wine Route runs. Some winegrowers let the visitors look over their shoulder, invite them to taste Hungarian specialities or lead them through the multi-storey cellars driven into the rock.
