Jutland Coffee Table

Cake without end: On the South Jutland coffee table

A long table with a snow-white cloth. On it pretzels, sponge cakes, sand cakes and cream cakes, biscuits and coffee: the South Jutland coffee table is a lavish arrangement - at least 14 different cakes and tarts are part of it.
This tradition originated in the middle of the 19th century - from the Danish resistance against the Prussian occupation.

After the lost war in 1864, the Prussian authorities had banned meetings and political rallies in occupied Jutland. Even Danish songs were not allowed to be sung in public. So the Danish patriots met for coffee and cake.

Tranquil little town: Tønder on the German-Danish border

This tradition from the time of the freedom fights is still alive - especially in Southern Jutland on the German-Danish border. In Tønder, it is commemorated with a large cake festival.
In addition to the largest coffee table in the country, there are many other attractions such as a cake fight, a baking competition, mini-concerts and lectures on the Danish struggle for freedom and the history of the Coffee Table.
