Arborea Polenta Festival

Piazza di Arborea, Sardinia

Corn in Italy is grown mainly in the northern provinces. In Friuli or Veneto, the corn porridge, the polenta, plays an important role in the diet of the population.
The fact that a corn festival is celebrated in the south of Sardinia, in Arborea, of all places, is due to the history of the village, which was only founded in 1928.

Arborea was created by draining the marshes of Oristano as a showcase project of Benito Mussolini's fascist regime.
He gave the agricultural land thus obtained to settlers from Veneto. And with the Venetians, corn also came to Sardinia.

The many ways in which it can be prepared - deep-fried or grilled, as porridge, served with tasty sausages or goulash - are demonstrated by the arborensi at the many stalls around the geometrically laid-out Piazza di Arborea.

Information stands exhibit corn, corn flour but also other local products.
Entertainment is provided by a military band in front of the church Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore, folklore groups and pop bands to whose music in the evening the whole village dances along.
