The garlic festival is celebrated in Buchlovice Castle at the end of July. The farmers of the surrounding area use it to honour the spice and medicinal plant, of which 2000 tonnes are harvested in the Czech Republic - about a third of the annual consumption.
The festival starts with the symbolic handing over of the harvest to the mayor, the planting of the garlic flag and the ceremonial singing of the garlic hymn.

During the festival, garlic dishes are tasted, people compete for the best garlic recipe, the most beautiful garlic braid - and of course a garlic queen is elected.
The event also includes a traditional brass band, lectures about garlic and various entertaining accompanying programmes for young and old.
