Crab Festival

Crab fishermen on horseback

Since the 16th century, the fishermen of Oostduinkerke on the Belgian east coast
have been setting sail for crab fishing on strong farm horses.
The traditional method has been Unesco's intangible cultural heritage since 2013 - and the focus of the annual crab festival on the last weekend of June.

Crab baskets on the beach of Oostduinkerke

Pulling a heavy net behind them, the horses wade fearlessly up to their breasts in the North Sea surf and collect the delicious crustaceans.
Three hours later they return with their riders to the beach, where the catch is sifted out and disappears into the baskets on the wooden saddle.

Crab fishermen: Sorting the catch

The crab fishery season lasts from mid-April to mid-September - the local tourist office of the municipality reveals exactly when the horses set sail.
In the last weekend of June - at halftime - the crab festival takes place - with music, a folkloristic market and lots of crabs to taste.
