Festival of the Gateau Basque
It is golden and round, decorated with a Basque cloverleaf and genuinely filled only with delicious cherry jam from Itxassou: The Gateau basque. In Cambo les Bains, on the Spanish-French border, the yeast cake is the protagonist of a great folk festival.
For a whole weekend, everything in the 6000-person town revolves around pastiza, as the cake is called in Basque: There are baking courses where the participants learn how to make a real Gateau basque.
But there are also tasting and selling stands with variations on the delicacies - for example filled with an almond cream.
Walking tours through the surrounding area are organized - with small stops where sidra and cakes are served. In the city centre, around 100 exhibitors present traditional Basque products: The famous Bayonne ham, Ossau Iraty cheese, Itxassou cherry or Espelette pepper.
Other highlights of the programme include the fair and the subsequent parade of the Brotherhood of Bakers.
A competition for the tastiest pastiza. Concerts on the square in front of the town hall or at the Saint-Laurent church and a colourful children's programme.
