Majada: Traditional shepherd's hut in the Picos de Europa

Asturias is Spains first cheese region: more than 40 officially registered varieties are produced in around 350 mostly small family farms. Particularly in the high mountain landscape of Picos de Europa, it is still the case that itinerant herdsmen wander through the mountains with their herds and produce their own cheese.
One of them is the Gamonéu: a cheese made from cow, sheep and goat milk with blue mould.

Every October in Benia, the capital of the municipality of Onís, a competition is held to determine who produces the best Gamonéu. Around 38 cheesemakers take part in the contest.
In addition to cheese, numerous other local products from the region are on display: The Asturian chicken Pita or the regional breed of sheep Oveya Xalda.

Besides the culinary delights, there are photo exhibitions and competitions, a boules championship or a show of the shepherds' herding dogs.
The highlight is the parade of the Brotherhood of Cheese Makers, which is accompanied by lots of music.
