Herring Festival in Clovelly

For centuries, the small fishing village of Clovelly on the south-west coast of England lived from herring fishing. In 1749 more than 1000 fishing boats anchored in the harbour - one of the oldest in England.
Today there are just two professional fishermen. To ensure that the tradition does not die out completely, the community has set up the Herring Festival.

During the event, a wide variety of herring dishes are served at the harbour quay. There are cooking demonstrations where the professionals show how to scaly, gut and prepare the fish.
If you like, you can try to mend fishing nets or watch the silver herring turn into golden kippers in the smokehouse.

A donkey ride through the historic, car-free village is also organised. Clovelly, which has been privately owned for 800 years, has a variety of whitewashed Fishermans Cottages, a historic lake rescue station and a Victorian garden.
