Melon Fair from Cavaillon
Cavaillon, in the heart of Provence, is France's melon capital. The aromatic Cantaloup variety in particular has been cultivated here since the end of the 15th century.
The Cavaillon-Melon Brotherhood is responsible for marketing the fruit and organises a festival every year in June.
Visitors can taste the sweet fruit in all imaginable variations at the festival: Freshly sliced - pure or with ham.
As sorbet or candied. As a spicy soup or with a wine or aperitif.
At nightfall, the streets of Cavaillon are lined with spectators who want to see the procession of floats, music groups and the Melon Queen.
Highlights are the hustle and bustle of a hundred wild horses from the Camargue through the alleys of the old town and the traditional, bloodless bull hares.
