Mussel Day in Yerseke

Cutter off the Oosterschelde

Lobsters or oysters from the Oosterschelde, periwinkles, cockles or beach lilac
- but also salt-loving plants on the coastal fringe:
During the season, from mid-July to the beginning of April, shiploads full of seafood are unloaded daily in the port of Yerseke.
More than 60 million kilos of shellfish.

Mussels in a basket

In August, when the work is done, it's time to celebrate: on the shores of the Oosterschelde, mussels simmer in white wine sauce in huge enamel pots. Oysters au gratin or grilled scallops are sold for a few euros over the counter at the snack stands.
And for the children, there is a funfair or the opportunity to sail along the Scheldt on a boat.
