Salt Festival

Cervia Canal

For centuries, the salt workers of Cervia in the southern Po Delta have been harvesting the white gold from the countless salt basins.
With its high sodium chloride content and mild taste, it is considered one of the best in Italy - and brought wealth and prosperity to the town, which was under Vatican rule until 1806. He got more out of it than out of the whole of Romagna, Cardinal Ostiense once declared.

Sapore di Sale: Havesting the Salt

Harvesting the Salt in September, when the traditional Burchiella boats brought the salt from the salt works to the storage facilities at the harbour, was always a great celebration - and the city fathers want to commemorate this tradition with the annual Sapore di Sale event.

Sapore di Sale: Distribution of Salt

The highlight is the still practised distribution of salt to the population at the weekend: Around ten tonnes of the white gold are brought among the waiting crowd on the quay.
The festival also includes show cooking in the salt tower, finger food stalls and wine tastings in Piazzale dei Salinari.

Sapore di Sale: Festive Mile

Guided bird watching tours through the salt flats are organised by the organisers, the salt museum can be visited or an exhibition with wellness products from the salt flats.
An international workshop with participants from other saltpan towns in the Mediterranean is also hosted.
