Venetian Cheese
They are called Montasio and Asiago, Piave and Provolone, Casatella Trevigiana and Grana Padano: Veneto is famous for its variety of cheeses, nine of which alone have a Protected Designation of Origin.
In the venerable Villa Contarini in Piazzola sul Brenta, the regional cheese consortium celebrates a festival with them.
The event is a great showcase of the cheesemakers of Veneto: more than 70 producers present 400 cheeses and compete in the great national competition for mountain and farm cheeses.
There will also be guided tastings with wine and grappa.
Further highlights of the event are the cooking shows and the presentation of traditional cheese production.
And a frico - a flat cake made from Montasio cheese that is roasted in a pan until it has reached a crispy consistency - is cooked in a huge pan and distributed to the visitors.
