Festival of the Geese

Goose memorial in Sarlat

The Perigord is known for its black truffle and foie gras
. This product, which has been criticised by many for animal welfare reasons, is considered a national cultural heritage in France.
In Sarlat-la-Canéda, it is the hub of a major folk festival.

Stand with foie gras at the goose festival in Sarlat

On the central square of the medieval town there is a large traditional market where the products of the terroir and of course the foie gras are promoted.
For all market visitors there is a Perigord-style bone soup, and those who have bought one of the 800 cards for the large banquet can enjoy goose specialities such as foie gras, grillons, stuffed neck, goose breast and wings or braised goose.

Goose keeper in historical costume

There are various cooking demonstrations and courses, bands play music and goose herds are driven through the old town streets in medieval costumes by their guardians.
It is also worth visiting them outside the festive season:

The Lanterne des Morts funeral chapel

The small town with its eventful history has a unique density of historical buildings and was not accidentally the location of many coat and sword films.
Especially worth seeing: the Lanterne des Morts Chapel of the Dead, the Rathaus or the former Bishop's Palace.
