Village and Bread Festival

The history of the municipality of Lesachtal in Carinthia begins on a wheat field:
in 1513 a farmer's wife dreamed of building a church in the middle of her cornfield.
Over the years, the place of pilgrimage developed into a small village with mills and a bakery.

The inhabitants of the valley have preserved the tradition of baking bread over the centuries, for Unesco it even represents an immaterial world cultural heritage.
Visitors to the village and bread festival in September learn how grain is ground, sourdough is prepared and bread is baked.

The event is opened by a festive service with a procession of guardian angels, and a traditional chapel plays on the village square, where the finished bread is ceremoniously cut and distributed. At noon there are typical delicacies - bread, ham, bacon, Kassuppen (cheese soup) or Schlupfkrapfen (Donuts) - accompanied by brass music.
