Onion Festival of Cannara

Cannara: View of the city from the river

For generations, the farmers of Cannara in the province of Perugia have been putting bulbs into the fertile clay. The red, golden or flat-round onions, which are harvested around six months later, are known beyond the region for their mild-sweet taste and good digestibility. They can be eaten raw, in salads, sauces or risotto and even come on the table as a fine onion jam.

The importance of the onion for the city is underlined by the Cipollari, the onion farmers, with their festival at the beginning of September: for a fortnight, the producers present onions at a market, but also other agricultural products of the region, such as the local wine Colli Martani Vernaccia.

Gastronomic stalls offer onion dishes, and a cooking show is also held in the San Sebastiano auditorium.
Piazza San Matteo, with its 13th-century church remodelled from 1788 to 1793, is the scene of jazz concerts and dance performances. Piazza Cavour hosts folkloric performances.
